Chimney Cleaning

With 12 fires or more per season it's recommended to have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually to maintain a safely operating system. If you plan on using it or have had more than 15 fires in the past, it's always good to have it cleaned. Start your burn season off on the right foot and establish a baseline of safety! Do everybody in your house a favour and err on the side of caution. Ensure your chimney is not plugged by leaves, branches, or glazed creosote.

Repointing

 

Mortar joints become damaged due to harsh weather conditions, particularly lots of rain, which here on Vancouver Island can be intense.  Moisture can even damage rock masonry, when water gets in due to weakened mortar joints.  Repointing is a repair process which stops the destructive processes that damage the mortar in your chimney, and provides numerous benefits. Save yourself an expensive rebuild!

Chimney Restoration

If noticed soon enough most chimneys can be saved and will not have to be rebuilt at three to four times the cost of repointing. (tuck pointing) 

Restoring a chimney’s weather seal is important in order to keep the moisture from passing inside the home and causing water damage. With cracks and holes in the crown, moss can grow quite quickly. When mortar joints lose their bond they turn back into sand, then moisture is absorbed into the sand and in the winter will freeze and pop apart. Once a chimney is saturated it can wick water throughout very quickly potentially causing damage in the attic and elsewhere. 

Repointing is the process in which loose mortar joints are ground out to reach the solid material within. A specialty mortar is then applied to each joint and is shaped to the contours of the bricks. After brushing away the moss and mildew, the crown or ‘wash’ (top of the chimney) gets a fresh layer of cement to fill in any cracks and or holes. Silicone sealant is used on the flashing that meets the chimney at the roof line.

Concrete Rain Caps 

Why do I need a rain cap? 

Having an unprotected opening at the top of the chimney allows water to cause a variety of unnecessary wear and tear. Having the chimney exposed to rain will cause problems down to the damper in the fireplace. Rain entering down into the chimney will cool the smoke causing it to stick to the sides of the flue liner, and can aid in the build-up of glazed creosote. Concrete rain caps are engineered to solve such a problem. They provide 45 degree driven Wind and Rain protection. Metal is not recommended and is difficult to fasten to a chimney. Metal caps tend to rust and sometimes blow away. Concrete rain caps are heavy and last a long time without replacement.
